Kerala: The Land Of Festivals

I’ve never thought that one day I would write about my state. The state where I was born; The state where I reside to date. The whole globe sees Kerala as God’s own country, as the land of spices, the land of greenery, etc. But for me, Kerala is the land of festivals. We celebrate various festivals like Onam, Vishu, Christmas, Eid, Diwali, etc. together, regardless of religion, caste, or creed. The Onam season which extends to about a month of celebrations marks the beginning of cultural festivities in Kerala according to the Malayalam calendar. During this season, people across the world get together in their respective native homes for the commemoration, which includes making Pookalams, cooking and eating Sadyas, and playing Onam games. Vishu is also celebrated by making and viewing Kanis together and bursting crackers. Christmas is celebrated in the outskirts of Fort Kochi and Mattanchery, which ends with the firing of the Huge Santa Statue on midnight of December 31st. Eid is celebrated in Eidgahs, and during those times, various dishes related to Eid are available across the state. There is also a major festival that makes Kerala famous which is none other than the Thrissur Pooram. It takes place in the premises of the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur and is known as one of the cultural and religious festivals in Kerala. Many non-natives, including foreigners, arrive at this place to watch this vibrant Mahotsav filled with Elephants, Melam, and fireworks. The festival is seen as a glory to the state. Kerala is known for its various festivals and cultures, which propagate the message of brotherhood and togetherness. Let this land be able to spread this message around the world.
