RABINDRA NATH TAGORE

Rabindra Nath Tagore wrote the poem "Jana Gana Mana" which was later set to music and became the national anthem of India. The story of how this happened is an interesting one.Tagore was invited to attend a session of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta in 1911. A resolution was passed to adopt a national anthem for India at the Congress. Tagore was asked to write a song that could serve as the anthem. He agreed to the request but he didn't immediately start working on it.In 1919 several years later Tagore was visiting a friend in South India when he was inspired to write the poem "Jana Gana Mana." The poem was written in Bengali and was originally titled "Bharat Bhagya Bidhata". It was a tribute to India and its people and it celebrated the diversity and unity of the country. The poem was first sung at a session of the Indian National Congress in Calcutta in 1919. The audience was so moved by the song that they stood up and applauded. The song soon became popular throughout India and it was frequently sung at public gatherings, patriotic events. The Indian government decided to adopt "Jana Gana Mana" as the national anthem in 1937. It was translated into Hindi and Urdu, and the music was composed by the musician and composer, Ram Singh Thakur. On January 24, 1950, "Jana Gana Mana" was officially adopted as the national anthem of India.

Rabindra Nath Tagore's poem has become an integral part of Indian culture and it continues to inspire and unite people of all backgrounds and beliefs.
